Wild animals roam among the park's geothermal oddities and beautiful scenery. Spend some time touring the charming gateway towns, each with its own distinctive Main Street filled with relics of Wild West culture. Glacier National Park is perhaps the most photographed destination in Montana, and with good reason. A wilderness of lakes, glacier-scarred peaks and diverse wildlife, it is wide open for adventure, including the drive up Going-to-the-Sun Road, a 52-mile engineering feat that climbs up and over the Continental Divide. One of the most intriguing places to stay in this area is in Essex at the Izaak Walton Inn, an old lodge that welcomed railroad workers in the 1930s.
In southeastern Montana, Crow Agency, the headquarters of the Crow Indian Reservation, becomes the "teepee capital of the world" in mid-August during the Crow Fair celebration, when thousands of tribal members gather to celebrate Native culture. Stop by and enjoy the entertainment.
