New Exhibitions
At the National Gallery of Art, Afghanistan comes into focus as Washington, D.C. plays host to a major exhibition of ancient treasures and artifacts believed to have been lost in the modern-day turmoil of civil war and political unrest. Organized by the National Geographic Society, "Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum" (May 25 — September 7, 2008) showcases historic relics including thrones, ornaments and mummies. LL Cool J, Erykah Badu, Common, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five are just a few of the hip-hop artists spotlighted in paintings and photographs in "RECOGNIZE! Hip Hop and Contemporary Portraiture," an exhibition at Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery (through October 26). Hip-hop is explored as a cultural phenomenon that has had a significant impact on self-expression and portrayal.
International Influences
Beyond the monuments and world-famous museums, Washington, D.C. is a vibrant multicultural city with diverse activities, attractions and neighborhoods. Eclectic Adams Morgan, the heart of the city's Latino community, is a round-the-clock mecca of offbeat shops, boutiques and restaurants. The U Street/14th Street district reflects the city's African-American roots with landmarks like Ben's Chili Bowl, founded in the 1950s by African-American entrepreneurs, and the legendary jazz club Bohemian Caverns.
Eco Impact
Environmental sustainability is a citywide mission. In fact, the new Washington Nationals ballpark holds the honor of being the country's first green-certified stadium. A number of hotels have made green initiatives a priority, including the Four Seasons, where the pool is maintained with a saltwater system. The Fairmont uses wind power to supply a portion of its energy, and at the Willard Intercontinental a plan is being implemented for a windpowered electrical system.
Power Dining
Since Washingtonians dine out more than any other regional population in the country, culinary aficionados and trendsetters will always find exceptional new restaurants to explore. After sporting events and concerts at the Verizon Center, celebrities and power players mingle at hotspots like Zola, a modern American dining room with a chic bar scene, and Café Milano, known for its superb Italian food. Many of Washington, D.C.'s top restaurants also have an eco-friendly focus, including Poste Moderne Brasserie, which has a garden.
Whether travelers are looking for sophisticated entertainment or a getaway with an eco-sensibility, Washington, D.C. is a forward-thinking metropolis with high art, haute style—and a green conscience.
